I’m Michael Santos with Timeshare Compliance. For multiple decades I’ve served as an advocate. Until recently, I focused my attention on our nation’s massive prison population. Since learning about the timeshare industry, however, I learned that “iron bars alone do not make a cage.” Unscrupulous, unethical, and sometimes fraudulent sales tactics victimize many people when they attended timeshare sales presentations.
When sales people use deception or fraud to trick elders into signing timeshare contracts that they don’t understand, they are taking advantage of people’s trust. Such actions may rise to criminal behavior when they victimize our nation’s senior citizens.
When I first heard about the lies told during timeshare presentations, I dismissed the stories as unfortunate but isolated incidents. Then I heard more lies from people who had been abused. I began to see patterns. Those patterns suggested that many within the timeshare industry engineered the lies. Rather than isolated manipulations, lying to elderly people who lived on fixed incomes seemed to be regular practice.
As one government official stated, elder abuse comes in many forms. Financial abuse, however, is considered to be the most common form of abuse to elders. Financial abuse of elders costs victims an estimated $2.6 billion a year. Victims can see their life savings depleted, and they don’t see many opportunities to recover from the financial setback.
Those victims suffer financially and emotionally. Suffering leads people to become fearful. Mental health can deteriorate because of the timeshare purchase.
Fortunately, consumer laws exist to protect all people who’ve been victimized by fraudulent sales tactics. Yet to paraphrase Mark Twain, it’s sometimes easier to fool people than to convince people that they’ve been fooled.
